No One Prepares You For
No one prepares you for the grief of getting exactly what you hoped for.
For raising a child to be brave enough to leave you.
For watching the little boy whose hand once disappeared inside yours pack up a life that no longer needs to fit beneath your roof.
No one tells you that pride and heartbreak can occupy the same exact space.
That you can be wildly excited for everything waiting for him and still ache for everything that is ending for you.
Because nothing is wrong.
This is the beautiful part.
He grew up.
He is ready.
You did the thing.
And still, there is grief.
Grief for the small shoes.
The noise in the house.
The ordinary Tuesdays you didn’t know you’d someday miss.
The thousand versions of him that existed for only a moment before becoming the next.
And maybe, if I’m being truthful, there is grief for a version of me, too.
Because while I was busy watching him grow up, I was growing older beside him.
His beginning is arriving alongside one of my endings.
He gets to ask, Who am I going to become?
And suddenly, so do I.
That’s the strange tenderness of this season.
I can miss the boy and celebrate the man.
I can mourn what was and be curious about what comes next.
I can want him home and still hope he builds a life so beautiful that he can’t wait to return to it.
Maybe motherhood was always supposed to break our hearts a little.
We spend years teaching them how to leave—
and then stand at the door,
smiling through tears,
hoping we gave them enough
to trust where they’re going.
