Bondage comes in many life altering forms. Unless bondage is processed and released, it will manifest in ways that will affect relationships, our bodies, and prevent personal growth. Religious bondage adds a level of shame rooted in religious teachings. When being challenged with this sort of bondage, there is worry about how the way you live affects this life, and the next. The overwhelming desire to please God, and live within the religious boundaries you were taught, creates disconnect from your core faith and produces anxiety.
Religious Bondage Can be Generational
If you grew up in church then you understand the passing down of religious practices. This can be a beautiful and ceremonial thing. Where bondage comes in, is when families take on beliefs that overshadow love and forgiveness.
You must go to church every week or you will go to hell, homosexuality is wrong, taking birth control is wrong, pre-marital sex is wrong, etc.
No matter your beliefs, if any of the above (or a multitude of other) things played a part in your life, then you might have been (or feel) ostracized, alone, and living as a sinner. You might feel that your God and family have turned their back on you.
Holding guilt and shame in your life creates deep rooted pain. Wanting to obsessively please your God and family is a threat to balance and challenges mental health.
Releasing religious bondage is not about abandoning faith or your belief system. It’s about focusing on what resonates with you outside of your upbringing. It’s focusing on establishing your own unique core beliefs. Releasing bondage promotes a personal and strong relationship with the God of your own understanding, spirituality, or whatever it is you choose to believe.
Letting go of religious bondage is an exercise in forgiveness. It’s a courageous path to increase love for yourself and the life you live. It’s breaking free from the stories that don’t bring you safety or promote love and healing.
My coaching program Releasing Religious Bondage, will support you on your unique and divine journey to forgiveness, hope, and healing.
